SCOTLAND SUCCUMB TO DEFEAT TO IMPRESSIVE ENGLAND
Scotland suffered a heavy 252-run defeat to neighbours England in their final Group C game in Harare.
Inserted by Scotland, England were the first side to pass 400 in this year's competition, posting 404-6 - Ben Mayes striking a remarkable 191 from 117 deliveries, the highest-ever England U19 ODI individual innings.
It was a total that always looked beyond Scotland, who once again saw a number of batters make starts without anyone kicking on, as Finlay Carter top scored with 34 out of his side's 152.
It's a result that leaves Scotland waiting for the outcome of tomorrow's clash between Zimbabwe and Pakistan to determine whether they will progress to the Super Six stage - currently sitting level on points with the hosts, with a superior net run rate.
Scotland Captain Thomas Knight said: "It's a disappointing day, we certainly missed the mark with the ball and in the field at times, and we got punished by an outstanding innings from Ben Mayes, that was unbelievable.
"With the bat we've certainly left a lot out there, we aimed for around 250 to keep us in the picture net run rate-wise, and we've fallen well short of that, so it's a disappointing day overall.
"We just need to be a little bit more consistent, we bowled our best ball at times, but not for long enough, and then with the bat, similar to Pakistan, we just need someone to go big and make those partnerships a little bit longer."
Scotland's day actually started positively as Finlay Jones struck in his second over, tempting Ben Dawkins to flash a wide delivery to Manu Saraswat at backward point.
That brought together Mayes and Joseph Moores, with the pair adding 188 from 129 deliveries in a brutal partnership that took the game away from Scotland - Mayes' century, brought up from 65 balls, the quickest by an English batter at this level.
Moores was Jones' second-victim, falling for 81, but Mayes would go onto hit 191, batting until the 46th over when he finally fell to Max Chaplin, caught superbly by Thomas Knight attempting a reverse sweep.
Moores and Mayes were the only batters to pass 35 for England, as Jake Woodhouse (3-88) removed the England middle order - but they had laid a platform that meant their side would reach 400 in the final over.
In response, Theo Robinson (19) and Thomas Knight (13) added 38 for the opening wicket, but Scotland then lost seven wickets for 49 runs as they slid to 87-7.
Scotland were able to recover behind Carter (34), Woodhouse (18) and Ethan Ramsay (20*), eventually being bowled out for 152 - Caleb Falconer finishing as the pick of the England bowlers with 3-19.
