COMMEMORATIVE BOOK LAUNCHED TO HONOUR SIR GARFIELD SOBERS

A book of remembrance honouring the late, great West Indies cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers will be on display at Scotland’s final ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 fixture  on Thursday. 

 

Scottish cricket supporters attending the game against Canada at Forfarshire Cricket Club will have the opportunity to contribute to the book honouring Sobers, who died last month aged 89.

 

Sobers is widely regarded as the greatest all-round player in cricket history. In 93 Test matches, he scored 8093 runs at an average of 57.78, with his highest score of 365 not out against Pakistan a world record at the time it was set in 1958.

 

 

A versatile bowler of both pace and spin, Sobers took 235 test wickets, and made 109 catches. He was also the first batter to hit six 6s in one over in first class cricket, for Nottinghamshire in 1968.

 

The book has been arranged by Stenhousemuir Cricket Club, which holds close ties to Barbados through local tourism board Stelar Travel and member John Barr. Sir Garfield had agreed to visit the club in 2020 but was prevented from doing so by the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year former Windies pace bowler Joel Garner took up Sir Garfield’s cause and visited the club, kicking off Stenhousemuir’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

 

The book will be available to sign at the bar at the south end of the ground at Forthill, and in the pavilion at Forthill for those attending hospitality. It will also be on display at Stirling during the women’s and men’s T20 finals this weekend, and at Arbroath during the Men’s Scottish Cup Final on Sunday 23 August.

 

Following the conclusion of the Scottish domestic season, the book will be sent to Barbados, where it is expected to be donated to a museum dedicated to Sobers.
