SCOTLAND MEN'S SQUAD NAMED FOR ICC CWCL2 SERIES IN USA

SCOTLAND MEN'S SQUAD NAMED FOR ICC CWCL2 SERIES IN USA

The Scotland Men’s squad has been named for the forthcoming ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 series against USA and Nepal, taking place in USA in October and November.

Spinner Oliver Davidson is recalled, two years on from his last involvement with the Scotland squad during their most recent tour of USA. Another returnee is Andrew Umeed, who featured in the CWCL2 series against UAE and Canada earlier this year, before returning home early due to injury.

“It’s really pleasing to be able to select such a strong men’s squad for this series,” said Cricket Scotland Head of Performance Steve Snell. “When the team has been playing really strong cricket, as it has done over the last year, it means there’ll be some very challenging conversations around selection.

“It’s positive we have these conversations as it’s evidence that the squad depth is growing, which we obviously saw with the debuts of Charlie Cassell, Jasper Davidson and Michael English in July.

“In terms of squad development, it’s been really pleasing to see how much growth there’s been and how competitive it has become across every position. Whenever we’ve provided opportunities to players during the course of the year, they’ve grabbed these with both hands and put their best foot forward.

“In the case of this tour, the recent performances of Andy Umeed and Scott Currie in English domestic cricket have been very impressive. The selectors agreed that both will enhance the squad for what we hope is a positive campaign in the USA. Oli Davidson has been recalled and there’s evidence of some real growth in his bowling, so we’re excited to provide him with an opportunity to get involved.

“There’s obviously some really experienced players who haven’t been selected for this tour. In particular it is important to highlight Safyaan Sharif and Chris Greaves, who have been such an integral part of our team and squad for so long, and who were both naturally disappointed to miss out this time.

“The selectors felt that other players offered slightly different attributes for this tour, but Safyaan and Chris are extremely competitive, proud and resilient individuals, and I certainly believe that there’s plenty of international cricket for both of them to look forward to and play in the future.

“The fact we are able to leave out players of their calibre at this moment just highlights the depth that exists now within the squad. Moving forward, we know that we are going to need that squad depth in order to compete not just in CWCL2 but also in the various T20 competitions that lie ahead.

“With various commitments of players across franchise cricket and English domestic cricket, it’s important that we grow that squad depth, but ultimately remembering that in order to qualify for World Cups, we need to continue to pick our strongest squad which is appropriate to conditions for every occasion.”
