RHC SKIPPER GEORGE WEST TO RUN 73KM IN SUPPORT OF BRONWYN SUMPTION

RHC SKIPPER GEORGE WEST TO RUN 73KM IN SUPPORT OF BRONWYN SUMPTION

On February 2, RH Corstorphine First Team Captain George West will be running 73km in support of Bronwyn Sumption, who has been bravely fighting a rare and aggressive type of blood cancer since May 2023.

Bronwyn, who also plays at RHC, is fighting is stage 3a primary mediastinal B-cell non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, known as PMBCL.

To help raise support for Bronwyn, and awareness of PMBCL, George West will be running 73 kilometres, starting at 6am, along a five-mile out-and-back route along the Crammond Sea front.

The funds raised will go directly towards helping Bronwyn with her everyday living expenses and any other support she needs during this challenging time.

George West said: "I spoke to Bronwyn, and wanted to do something for her, and also to increase knowledge of the cancer she has, and increase blood stem cell donations.

"I wanted a number that resonated with her, and throughout her journey she's endured 73 individual bags of chemotherapy, so each kilometre represents one bag of chemotheraphy that she's had.

"The aim is to help support Bronwyn in her daily life, her and her partner have been unable to work for a long time due to Bronwyn's illness, and although £3000 doesn't seem like much, every little bit helps.

"Aside from the donations, an ambassador from DKMS, a charity who recruit blood stem cell donors, and raise funds to cover donor registration costs, will be coming up on the day, and will be there to help people join the stem cell registry."

It's a challenge that will put the RHC skipper out of his comfort zone, as he expects to be on the road for 12 hours on February 2.

"It's not completely alien, I have run half-marathon's before, but 73km is a big step up from that I suppose!

"I have trained pretty hard, the last couple of weeks have probably been by two biggest training weeks, but I'm still probably not feeling ready for it!

"Sometimes I've been running three times a day, I've got up at 5am to do half-marathons before work, so it has been tough, especially in the last week or so with the weather, where I've been out at 6am and it's -5!"
