FREUCHIE: 40 YEARS SINCE LORD'S AND THE VILLAGE CUP

Freuchie CC have marked the 40th anniversary of one of Scottish cricket's greatest achievements - victory in the Village Cup at Lord's.

 

On 31 August 1985, the village emptied as hundreds of supporters headed south to the home of cricket, where Freuchie defeated Rowledge in a thrilling encounter to become the first Scottish team to win the Village Cup.

 

40 years on, the club commemorated the anniversary with a reception and celebration lunch at the Lomond Hills Hotel in Freuchie, with attendance from former players and numerous dignitaries, including Cricket Scotland's President Omar Henry and Chief Executive Trudy Lindblade. 

 

 

There is extra celebration in the Fife air this week, after Freuchie's first XI sealed the SPCU North East Championship on Saturday with a win over nearest rivals Huntly. They'll now face ESCA champions Watsonian CC in the EPL Playoff on Saturday 6 September for a place in next year's EPL.

 

 

To mark the 40th anniversary of Freuchie's success in the Village Cup, Cricket Scotland has commissioned a special video feature looking back at the occasion, with contributions from Freuchie's captain in 1985 David Christie BEM and wicketkeeper Alan Duncan.
