SENSATIONAL CASSELL BLOWS AWAY OMAN WITH HISTORIC DEBUT
A remarkable debut performance from Charlie Cassell saw Scotland hammer Oman by eight wickets to make it back-to-back wins at Forfarshire.
Cassell made a dream start with a wicket from his first ball – and it only got better from there, taking 7-21, the best ever figures from a bowler on ODI debut, as Oman were bowled out for 91.
Scotland eased to their target inside 18 overs, as Brandon McMullen and Richie Berrington saw their side across the line.
Reflecting on his record-breaking performance, Charlie Cassell said: "It's a bit surreal at the moment, it hasn't quite sunk in. You wake up hoping to get one or two on debut, you don't expect to get seven, so to be able to get this result is unreal.
"I actually wasn't too nervous, because I've been with these boys a bit now it wasn't weird, you don't feel under too much pressure, the boys and Richie (Berrington) are very much wanting you to enjoy your cricket, so I was pretty relaxed and just hoping to get it in the right spot, which happened to happen!"
It was the perfect start for Brad Currie on his return to the Scotland side, striking with the fourth ball of the match as he had Aqib Ilyas caught at slip by Chris Greaves.
Pratik Athavale started brightly as he found the boundary three times in Brandon McMullen’s opening over, before McMullen settled into his rhythm and bowled Karan Sonavale (3), to reduce Oman to 22-2.
Athavale and Zeeshan Maqsood looked to rebuild their side's innings as they batted sensibly, seeing off the opening pair of Currie and McMullen as they reached 49-2 in 11 overs.
Enter Charlie Cassell, on ODI debut, who blasted Oman away with a stunning first-ever spell on the international stage.
With his first ball, Maqsood (10) was trapped LBW, before he then bowled Ayaan Khan with a superb delivery – becoming the first bowler to take two wickets with his first two balls in Men’s ODI cricket.
He would strike again with his fourth ball, Khalid Kail edging to Greaves at slip, as a triple-wicket maiden saw Oman crumble to 49-5.
Cassell, a late call-up to the squad for this series, had also taken the final two wickets in two balls for Scotland A against Oman on July 12 – meaning he had taken four wickets in four balls, and five wickets in six balls against the same opposition.
The carnage would continue in Cassell’s following over, as he had Shoaib Khan (1) caught by Michael Leask.
Mehran Khan, coming in at 55-6, looked to counter-punch, hoisting first Gavin Main, and then Cassell away for six, as he raced to 17.
However, he too would fall to Cassell, his fifth, as he hit one straight up in the air to Brandon McMullen who took a comfortable catch in the ring.
Athavale, who had been holding the innings together, would be the next to fall for a well-made 34, caught by Jarvis off the bowling of Cassell, to leave Oman 85-8.
Main would get in on the act on his return to ODI cricket for the first time since 2022, removing Kaleemullah (4) caught by Leask, before Cassell wrapped-up the innings with the score on 91, Bilal Khan caught off the top-edge by Matthew Cross.
Scotland’s pursuit of 92 got off to a tricky start as Charlie Tear (4) fell early, Athavale taking a superb catch behind the stumps, diving to his right, from the bowling of Fayyaz Butt.
After a quiet start, George Munsey and McMullen soon clicked into gear, and took three boundaries from a single Mehran Khan over.
However, after flailing Bilal Khan away through the covers, Munsey would fall for 23, dragging one onto his stumps to leave Scotland 47-2.
McMullen, joined by Richie Berrington, would continue to find the boundary with regularity as Scotland eased towards their target of 92.
The target would be reached in 17.2 overs with Berrington (24*) driving Bilal Khan stylishly through the covers, as he and McMullen (37*) saw Scotland home to a comfortable victory over Oman.
