SCOTLAND'S WORLD CUP HOPES ENDED BY FINAL BALL DEFEAT
Scotland's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup came to an end as they suffered a one-wicket defeat to Jersey from the final ball of the game.
Chasing 134, Jersey seemed to be cruising to their target at 81-1 after 11 overs, but Scotland fought back superbly - taking eight wickets for just 48 runs, as Jersey slipped to 129-9, at which point they needed five runs from the final four deliveries.
But Charles Perchard and Jake Dunford managed to scramble their side over the line from the final ball, to keep Jersey's hopes of reaching the World Cup alive - and end Scotland's.
Scotland Men's Head Coach Doug Watson said: "I was very disappointed with today's defeat, we didn't bat well being five down inside eight overs, and then we probably didn't start as well as we would have like with the ball in the first 10 overs.
"I will give credit to the character shown in fighting to get them nine down, from around the 11th over, the guys showed a lot of character, fight and skill to get to that point - but we haven't played well enough in this tournament."
Sent into bat, Scotland suffered a disastrous start as their top three all fell inside the opening three overs – Harrison Carlyon dismissed Oli Hairs (0) and George Munsey (10), whilst Perchard bowled Brandon McMullen (1) – to eave the Scots 13-3.
Carlyon continued to rip through the Scotland top order, as he struck in a third consecutive order - Charlie Tear's attempted drive picking out Julius Sumerauer at cover.
Richie Berrington and Michael Leask set about rebuilding the innings, and took the score to 43 – when Berrington came unstuck, striking Ben Ward to Zak Tribe on the long-off boundary to fall for 20.
Leask and Matthew Cross added 21 for the sixth wicket, but the first sign of aggression from the former brought his downfall, holing out to Jonty Jenner off Ward for 15.
That brought Cross and Watt together, the pair adding a vital 61 for the seventh wicket. They batted watchfully initially, taking Scotland to 86-6 in 16 overs – before a late onslaught brought 47 from the final four overs.
Watt struck Perchard for three consecutive boundaries in the 18th over, twice reverse sweeping for four before hoisting him over the leg-side boundary for six.
He fell for 28 in the final over, bowled by Sumerauer, but Chris Greaves struck his first ball for six, as Scotland recovered to 133-7 – Cross finishing on a vital, unbeaten 43.
Jersey’s pursuit of 134 started positively as Carlyon and Nick Greenwood both found the boundary early on – Greenwood thumping McMullen aerially down the ground in consecutibe deliveries.
Carlyon lofted Watt delightfully over cover for six, but he fell to the next ball for 15, struck on the back pad in front of the stumps.
Greenwood and Zak Tribe then batted superbly, adding 53 relatively risk-free runs for the second wicket, as they seemed to be easing their side towards a historic victory.
But Chris Greaves struck back for Scotland with two wickets in an over, removing both set batters LBW, Greenwood for 49 and Tribe for 14 – reducing Jersey to 82-3 after 12 overs.
Jenner and Sumerauer took Jersey past 100, but suffered a blow as Sumerauer flicked a Safyaan Sharif delivery straight to Tear on the square-leg boundary.
And when Leask bowled Jenner from the first ball of the following over, Jersey were 106-5 – and the required rate had crept back above a run-a-ball.
Scotland continued to chip away, Watt bowling Charlie Brennan (3), before Patrick Gouge and Dom Blampied were both run out in the penultimate over - which left Jersey requiring five from the final over, with two wickets in hand.
And Scotland had snatched back the initiative when Sharif removed Ward, Brandon McMullen taking a stunning catch at full stretch on the long-on boundary.
But with just one wicket in hand, Dunford and Perchard managed to edge Jersey over the line.
