SENSATIONAL SCOTS OVERWHELM DUTCH IN WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

Scotland sailed to an emphatic ten-wicket win against the Netherlands in the first ICC Women’s Under 19 T20 World Cup Qualifier at Mannofield.

 

Bowling first, the Scots pinned their opponents down and never allowed them to settle, rolling the Dutch over for 41, with three wickets each for Mollie Parker, Kirsty McColl and Maisie Maceira. Pippa Kelly and Emma Walsingham then raced to the target inside five overs to seal a crushing victory.

 

Northern Counties’ left armer Parker got the Scots off to a flyer in the second over, claiming her first two wickets – clean bowling opener Lotte Schmidt, before dismissing Carlijn van Koolwijk for a duck two balls later.

 

Gabriella Fontenla, bowling from the opposite end, dismissed Ana Wijfells to leave Netherlands 13-3. Parker’s accuracy caused the Dutch batting line up significant bother, with a maiden piling the pressure on.

 

 

Maceira came on as first change and made an immediate impact with Molly Barbour-Smith taking a catch as Lara Leemhuis was out for two. Parker then claimed her third wicket, with the final ball of her four overs, bowling Pien Oost to round off a spell that saw the Highlander awarded the Player of the Match.

 

After a small Dutch rally, a spell of wickets fell in quick succession, with the lower order unable to cope with the lethal home bowling attack on the green wicket.

 

Kirsty McColl opened her account with the wicket of Rosalie Lawrence, as the wicketkeeper played on to the stumps. Maceira grabbed her second of the innings, bowling van der Werf. Fontenla claimed a great catch on the boundary from McColl’s bowling as top scorer van den Raad tried to clear the rope at long on, to make it 33-8.

 

 

A third wicket each for McColl and Maceira ended the Netherlands innings within 16 overs, as they struggled to 41 all out.

 

Scotland didn’t mess around in their reply, as Kelly and Walsingham made their presence known to the Dutch bowling attack. Kelly produced an excellent knock of 26 from 21 deliveries as the home side raced to their target without the loss.

 

 

Scotland will clinch their spot at the ICC Women’s Under 19 T20 World Cup in Malaysia and Thailand on Friday, if they beat the Netherlands in the second of this three-game series. Entry is free, with a start time of 14:30 at Mannofield.
