SCOTLAND WOMEN U19 WELCOMED TO HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA CAMPUS

SCOTLAND WOMEN U19 WELCOMED TO HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA CAMPUS

To mark Cricket Scotland's partnership with Heriot-Watt University Malaysia for the upcoming ICC U19 Women's T20 World Cup 2024, the squad visited the University’s campus in Kuala Lumpur, engaging with students and the wider community in an inspiring on-campus event, aimed at encouraging greater interest in women’s sports in Malaysia and beyond.

The sponsorship reflects Heriot-Watt University’s enduring commitment to empowering women and youth in sports and education. Since 1869, when Mary Burton became the first woman on its board and successfully campaigned for the Watt Institution and School of Arts to admit women — 23 years before other Scottish universities — the University has led in championing inclusivity. Burton's advocacy for women’s suffrage and educational equality continues to inspire Heriot-Watt’s mission to promote inclusivity and empower future generations.

As Scotland prepare to make their second consecutive appearance at the U19 Women’s World Cup, this collaboration is a testament to both organisations’ shared values of excellence and empowerment.

The event, which was attended by the University's leadership, students, and distinguished guests, also saw the participation of the representatives from the British Malaysia Chamber of Commerce, further solidifying the strong relationship between Malaysia, Scotland, and the world of sport. During the visit, students at the University had the opportunity to meet the Scotland Women’s team, hear from the players, and learn about their journey to the World Cup.

Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi, Provost and Chief Executive Officer of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, said:

“As an institution committed to nurturing purpose-driven leaders, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia is proud to support initiatives that empower women and foster inclusivity in sports and education. By partnering with Scotland’s Under-19 Women’s National Cricket Team, we are not only celebrating their achievements but also inspiring the next generation to break barriers, drive positive change, and make a lasting impact on communities in Scotland, Dubai, Malaysia, and beyond.

“In addition, this partnership highlights our shared commitment to championing excellence. In line with this, we are honoured to host the Scotland Women’s cricket team, offering our students the chance to engage with these remarkable athletes and support them on their journey to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup."
