SCOTLAND ONE STEP CLOSER TO TARGET AS BANGLADESH AWAIT

Scotland Women Under 19s are one step closer to their target of reaching the 'Super Six' stage of the U19 T20 World Cup in Malaysia, with one group stage game remaining.

 

Scotland's dramatic one-wicket victory over Nepal means that victory over Bangladesh on Wednesday morning would secure a spot in the next round of the competition; defeat, and they will be cheering on Australia against Nepal later in the day.

 

It was a resilient Scotland performance, fighting back from 37-6 and 58-9 in their pursuit of 74, which secured a first group stage win at a Women's Under 19 World Cup.

 

Head Coach Kari Carswell said: “We're delighted to get over the line in a close game, which was probably closer than we really wanted.

 

"The girls showed great character, resilience, and fight, and showed a real ability to keep calm under pressure, especially towards the back end of our batting innings.

 

 

“We’re pretty happy with where we’re at with our bowling, and carrying on from the UAE into this competition.

 

"The way Maisie bowled and executed her skills, especially her slower balls, was really pleasing to see, we know she’s capable of putting those performances in, so to see her do it on this stage is brilliant.

 

“All of our bowlers were fantastic, we took wickets throughout the innings, and even when they got a bit of a partnership going, we didn’t panic, and just continued to execute our skills with the ball really well."

 

 

Kirsty McColl, who took 1-13 with the ball against Nepal, was part of the match-winning 16 run partnership alongside Gabriella Fontenla, striking the winning run.

 

McColl said: “When I was waiting in the middle when we needed one run to win, I was just trying to block everything else out, and all I was thinking about was I wanted to get it done that ball, I didn’t want to hang around.

 

“When I got it over the field, it was just utter relief, I’m obviously not a batter, but I knew I needed to go over the top, I just wasn’t too concerned about where!

 

“The aim from the start has been to get out of the group, so that win puts us in really good shape, and we can go into tomorrow confident, back our skills and know that we can do it, and I think everyone’s going to really enjoy it."
